Day trip from the town Gorazde to the heritage site Gorsic Polje

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a  committee member for UNESCO

We will start our trip from the town of Gorazde at 9:00 am and drive about 31 kilometres to Gorsic Polje. Part of the drive, for about 14.5 km, is on a freeway, after which we continue on a narrow road through forests for about 6.5 km. We will then continue on a dirt road enjoying the outlook for the remaining 10.00km – altogether about a 45 min drive. At the hub of Brzaca we will park our vehicle and continue to walk along a track for just over a kilometre (about a 15 min walk) through unspoiled nature, enjoying Bosnia’s flora and fauna on our way to the heritage site.

We will hear some basic facts about this heritage site, after which you can inspect and explore based on your own interests. We will be at your disposal and will eagerly answer any questions you may have. As part of this tour we would like you to feel as if you are a local and a part of our community, enjoying our cuisine that is prepared fresh and sourced from local organic products.

After the tour we will invite you for lunch prepared as part of our project Eat with the Locals, giving back to our deserving local community. We will serve traditional Bosnian bread, pies, cream cheese, stews and a variety of organic, locally produced jams and juices that you can enjoy in an unspoiled natural environment, surrounded by elements of Bosnian cultural heritage. It belongs to all of us and is there for us to learn from, reflect on, and explore.

Gorazde is the administrative centre for Podrinje Canton. The region is of great cultural richness, having many cultural monuments that differ in their construction, appearance and workmanship. There are large numbers of monuments that mark different periods in the development of mankind. The necropolis in Gorsic Polje, municipality of Gorazde, is one of these rare monuments.

Gosric Polje is a medieval necropolis and is part of Bosnia’s treasured heritage consisting of 324 tombstones decorated with lilies, sickles and stars. The necropolis is positioned in semicircular rows where the distance between the stones is almost identical, showing the precision in tombstone placement even in ancient times. The necropolis is protected by the Commission for Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The site gained international recognition in July 2016, during a conference in Istanbul, becoming listed as a World Heritage site. This necropolis is amongst 28 others, from four different countries, that are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. No conservation or restoration work has been carried out and it is still in its original state.

Our Gorazde-based history specialist, Professor Eldin Baljevic, is a Culture and Heritage Ambassador and he will be your tour guide through age-old culture, helping you to step back in time and welcoming you to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s wealth of cultural heritage.
